Several submarine cables are currently faulty, affecting internet speeds for users in Vietnam.
According to VTV, an internet service provider (ISP) in Vietnam said that 3 of the 5 submarine cables connecting Vietnam to the world are currently faulty.
The most recent is the IA (Intra Asia) cable, which failed in the early hours of 13 June. The other two faulty submarine cables are APG (Asia-Pacific Gateway) and AAE-1 (Asia – Africa – Europe 1).
Having 3 of the 5 submarine cables connecting Vietnam to the world out of service has seriously affected Vietnam’s international internet capacity. Users in Vietnam will have difficulty accessing websites and services hosted overseas during this period. However, the fault does not affect access to websites and services hosted in Vietnam.
After the fault occurred, carriers in Vietnam applied several measures to maintain users’ internet connectivity, such as sharing traffic between international cable routes, opening additional access channels and making use of terrestrial fibre-optic routes.
The repair schedule and the time the cables will be fixed have not yet been announced.
Vietnam currently has 5 submarine cables connecting it to the world: AAG (Asia – America); APG (Asia-Pacific Gateway); SMW-3 (Southeast Asia – Middle East – Western Europe); IA (Intra Asia) and AAE-1 (Asia – Africa – Europe). There is also a smaller cable, TVH, just 3,367 km long, connecting Thailand, Vietnam and Hong Kong (China).
Besides the submarine cables, there are still some terrestrial fibre-optic routes connecting Vietnam to the world. However, most international internet traffic from Vietnam is carried over the undersea cables.
